Digital marketing: SEO, content, social media and email working as one system
Give every channel a role, connect them and measure what brings customers.

Your website, your posts and your newsletter should be doing one job together
How a small business joins search, content, social media and email into one digital marketing approach, and measures which part brings customers.
Digital marketing: from being visible to winning customers
Most small businesses already do some digital marketing: a website untouched since launch, a social account that posts when there is time, an occasional newsletter. Each part costs hours, none feeds the others, and nobody can say which one brought the new customers. Digital marketing starts to pay when search, content, social media and email work as one system with one goal: turning strangers into enquiries and enquiries into customers.
The worked example below is in euros; the logic works in any currency.
What is digital marketing, and what does each channel do?
Digital marketing is marketing through digital channels: search engines and AI assistants, your website, content, social media, email and online ads. Give each channel a role instead of a to-do list.
| Role | Channels | When results come |
|---|---|---|
| Be found by people already looking | SEO, map listings, search ads | SEO takes months; search ads work at once but stop when you stop paying |
| Earn trust before the sale | Content, reviews, case studies | Builds slowly and keeps working |
| Stay in mind until the next need | Social media, email | Steady, as long as you keep a rhythm |
| Turn attention into an enquiry | Website, booking or quote form, retargeting | Immediate, once the other roles bring visitors |
The roles depend on each other. Content gives search engines something to rank and social media something to share; posts and emails bring people back to the website. When one link is missing, money spent on the others leaks away.
SEO: how to get found in search engines and AI answers
Search engine optimisation (SEO) means making your pages easy for search engines to find, understand and trust. Google's own SEO starter guide is a sober read: no trick guarantees a top position, and some changes take months to show. Three foundations carry most of the weight.
- Pages that answer real questions: one per service or product, in the customer's words, with a price range, the area you serve and what happens next.
- A sound site: fast on a phone, a clear title per page, logical internal links.
- Reputation: links and mentions from suppliers, trade associations, local media and partners, plus genuine reviews.
Being cited in AI search answers
AI answers draw on ordinary web pages. Google states that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet (source: Google Search Central, December 2025). OpenAI uses a separate crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to surface websites in ChatGPT search, independent of GPTBot, which collects content for model training (source: OpenAI, October 2026). You can refuse training and stay findable.
So check that your robots.txt file (which tells crawlers what they may visit) does not block search crawlers by accident, put the direct answer in the first lines of a page, and keep hours, prices and service area identical everywhere. Google's guidance on people-first content accepts AI-assisted writing, but not automation aimed at manipulating rankings.
Local search
For a business with nearby customers, a map listing often brings more enquiries than the website. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and its Business Profile help says you cannot pay for a better position. You control complete details, opening hours, photos and a reply to every review.
Google Search Console's Performance report shows the queries you appear for, your clicks and your average position. Traffic from Google's AI features is included under the Web search type (source: Google Search Central, December 2025).
Content marketing: answer what customers ask before they buy
Content marketing means publishing useful material that attracts the customers you want and helps them decide. The best topics are in your inbox: the questions people ask before they buy and the doubts that delay a decision. Answer them properly, show proof such as cases and before-and-after photos used with permission, and refresh your best pages instead of writing new ones on the same topic. One solid piece a month, reused across channels, beats a burst of ten followed by silence.
Social media: distribution and conversation, not a shop window
Social media is where your content meets people who are not searching yet: business buyers mostly through LinkedIn, local consumers through Facebook, Instagram and community groups. Organic reach (people who see a post without you paying) is limited, so use posts to start conversations and send people to your site. Channel choice and a ten-step approach are in social media for business.
Email marketing: the channel you own
Followers belong to the platform; an email list belongs to you, and a monthly newsletter or a follow-up after a quote turns trust into repeat business. In the EU, marketing email to individuals needs prior consent, with a narrow exception for a business's own similar products, offered to existing customers who can object easily in every message (source: EUR-Lex, December 2009). The US CAN-SPAM Act works the other way round: no prior consent, but an honest sender, a postal address and an opt-out in every message, business email included (source: US Federal Trade Commission, August 2023). The UK, Canada and Australia have rules of their own; online marketing campaign compares them side by side, together with the cookie rules for tracking pixels.
How to connect the channels: one monthly cycle
Integration is a routine more than software: each channel takes its input from the one before.
- 01
Pick the question of the month
Take it from customer emails, calls or the queries in Search Console: something buyers ask before they decide.
- 02
Answer it on your website
A page that answers the question fully and ends with a clear next step, such as a booking button or quote form.
- 03
Cut it up for social media
A few posts and a short video, each pointing to the page with a tagged link.
- 04
Send it to your list
The monthly email leads with the answer and adds one offer.
- 05
Pay only for what works
After a week, put a small local budget behind the post that drew the most clicks.
- 06
Review and feed back
Count enquiries per channel, note the new questions people asked and choose next month's topic.
How to measure digital marketing
Look monthly at one number per role: search clicks, visits to key pages, email clicks and replies, and above all enquiries and orders. Two habits keep those numbers honest. Tag every link in posts, emails and ads with UTM parameters (short labels on a link that tell your analytics where a visitor came from); Google's URL builder help advises always setting utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. And ask every new customer how they found you, because people often see a post, search your name a week later and then call.
Cost per enquiry = channel costs / enquiries from that channel
Cost per customer = channel costs / new customers from that channel
Example: a physiotherapy practice joins up its channels
Esme Halloran runs Dunecrest Physio, two treatment rooms in a seaside town. She used to post on Instagram now and then and paid for a directory listing. Then she rebuilt around bookings: a complete map listing, five service pages answering the questions patients ask on the phone, Instagram posts based on those pages with a small local ad budget, and a monthly email to former patients. After one quarter she adds it up.
| Channel | Costs in the quarter | Enquiries | Bookings | Cost per booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Map listing and reviews | €0 | 42 | 24 | €0 |
| Service pages (copywriter, one-off) | €660 | 18 | 11 | €60 |
| Instagram posts and local ads | €300 | 15 | 6 | €50 |
| Monthly email to former patients | €90 | 16 | 15 | €6 |
| Health directory listing | €450 | 4 | 2 | €225 |
| Referrals from doctors and sports clubs | €0 | 22 | 20 | €0 |
| Total | €1,500 | 117 | 78 | €19.23 |
Fictitious Firmfocus example. Bookings include returning patients. Costs exclude VAT; Esme's own hours are not costed. A first course of treatment is five sessions of €60, so €300.
- Local search is the largest source: 24 bookings for time only.
- Service pages are an investment: €60 per booking is 20% of a first course, and the cost falls next quarter because the pages are paid for.
- Instagram works through the pages: the UTM data show that most Instagram visitors read a service page before booking.
- The directory goes: €225 per booking is 75% of a first course.
Small start vs larger start
Sole trader with time but little budget
A complete map listing, one page per service and one social channel. Write one useful piece a month and reuse it. Collect email addresses with consent from the first customer, and spend money only on channels that have brought enquiries.
Business with staff and a budget
Give each role an owner and a target, and write down the tracking rules: UTM naming and what counts as an enquiry. Test ads with a fixed budget and a stop rule, and have agencies open ad accounts in the business's name.
Common digital marketing mistakes
- Channels in silos: posts that link nowhere, a newsletter that repeats the posts.
- Renting your audience: building only on followers and never collecting email addresses.
- Someone else's accounts: an agency or former employee owns the ad account, domain or listing.
