Six issues that belong on the management agenda

AI, sustainability, staff, supply chains, energy and succession: what each means for your strategy and which choices you have.

Trend reports are long, and most of what they list will never change your business. A few issues are different. They cut across industries and countries, they touch costs, customers, capacity and the business model at the same time, and they force choices that are hard to reverse. These strategic themes are the subject of this section.

Each article sets out what is happening, what it means for strategy and which options a business has, with sources you can check. They build on the external analysis and the PESTLE analysis, and on scenario planning where the outcome is uncertain.

Which strategic themes shape business now?

AI strategy

About one in five EU enterprises with ten or more employees used AI technologies in 2025, against more than half of large enterprises (source: Eurostat, December 2025). Using tools is not yet a strategy. The question is where AI touches your business model and productivity, and what the EU AI Act asks of you now.

Sustainability and reporting

The EU's Omnibus I package has reduced the number of companies that must report under the CSRD, and limits what those companies may ask of the businesses in their value chain (source: European Commission, July 2026). For most firms the question is what customers, lenders and investors expect, and where sustainability creates value rather than paperwork.

Talent and labour shortages

In many sectors the limit to growth is no longer demand but people. The article shows how to calculate labour capacity and compares the options: automation, reorganisation, training, price and the work you turn down.

Geopolitics and supply chain risk

Tariffs, sanctions and conflicts can cut off a supplier or a market at short notice. Which links in your chain are fragile, what does a second source cost, and when is resilience worth more than efficiency?

Energy costs and grid capacity

Volatile energy prices, the shift from fuels to electricity and the question whether the grid can supply the power you plan to need all shape expansion, investment and the choice of location.

Succession and exit

Handing over or selling a business takes years, not months. The article compares the routes, from family and management to an outside buyer or employees, and shows how to make the business transferable while you still control the timing.

From theme to strategic choice

A theme becomes strategic the moment it forces a choice. Ask three questions for each one.

  1. 01

    How large is the impact?

On costs, customers, capacity or the business model. A theme that touches one cost line belongs in the budget, not in the strategy.

  2. 02

    How certain is the development?

Where the direction is clear but the speed is not, work with scenarios instead of a single forecast.

  3. 03

    What must be decided now?

Some themes need a decision this year. For others it is enough to watch a few signals, with a plan ready on the shelf.

Here is how a fictitious regional transport company with 60 staff scored the six themes.

ThemeImpactCertaintyDecide now or watch
AIMedium: route planning and administrationHighNow: two pilots, in planning and invoicing
SustainabilityHigh: large shippers ask for emissions data per tripHighNow: emissions data per trip within a year
LabourHigh: drivers are the bottleneckHighNow: own driver training and retention plan
Supply chainLow: few critical suppliersMediumWatch: delivery times for new vehicles
EnergyHigh: electric trucks need charging power at the depotLow: timing of a heavier grid connection unclearNow: apply for the connection; scenarios for the fleet mix
SuccessionMedium: the owner wants to step back within ten yearsHighWatch: start the succession plan within two years

Take the outcome into the SWOT analysis and the TOWS matrix. A threat to the industry can be an opportunity for a business with the right strengths: the transport company that solves its driver shortage first can win the customers of competitors who did not.

Small business or larger organisation

ThemeSmall businessLarger organisation
AIProductivity in administration, sales and customer contact; dependence on a few software vendorsBusiness model, data, governance and compliance with AI rules across units
SustainabilityData requests from customers, lenders and investorsReporting duties where they apply, supply chain policy and transition plans
LabourCapacity is a direct limit on revenueEmployer brand, automation and choice of location
GeopoliticsDependence on a few suppliers or one export marketSpreading production and sourcing across regions
EnergyExpansion or electrification at the current siteLong-term planning of sites and investments around grid capacity
SuccessionTransfer of the whole businessSelling or spinning off units

The themes are one part of Strategy. To put them to work, run them through the steps of strategy in five steps, from external analysis to the final choice.

Which trends should I include in my strategy?
Only the trends that noticeably affect your costs, customers, capacity or business model. For many smaller businesses these are staff, digital tools and AI; for energy-intensive businesses, energy and grid capacity as well. Score each trend on impact and certainty and drop the rest.
How often should I review these themes?
At every annual strategy review, and in between when new legislation or a development makes one of your assumptions invalid. Make one person responsible for following each theme that matters to you.
Is this legal or tax advice?
No. The articles describe the situation at the time of writing, with sources. Rules differ by country and change over time, so check the official source for your country and ask an adviser about your own situation.
