Green funding for business: tax incentives, grants and green loans for your sustainability investment
Tax incentives, grants, green loans and promotional banks each pay part of the bill, if you apply before you order.

Part of your green investment can come back, if you ask in the right order
Tax incentives, grants, green loans and promotional banks each cover a different slice of the bill, and the timing rules decide whether you get them.
Green funding for business rarely arrives as one cheque. A heat pump, a solar roof or a pair of electric vans is usually paid for by a mix: a tax incentive that lowers your tax bill afterwards, sometimes a grant, a loan on green terms from your own bank, and own cash. Each part has its own rules on what qualifies, who decides and when you must apply. Miss a window and the money is gone, however sensible the investment.
The programmes differ by country, the logic does not. Public support is meant to change what you buy and when, so it rewards the business that plans before it orders. Wider public support, such as R&D relief and loan guarantees, is covered in grants and public funding.
Many schemes count from the moment you commit to a purchase, not from the invoice or the installation date. Some tax incentives must be reported within a short window after the order, and grant schemes often require approval before you sign anything. Sign the quote first and you may lose the support.
What kinds of green funding exist?
Investment tax incentives
An extra deduction, faster depreciation or a tax credit for assets on an official list. Useful only if you make a taxable profit, unless the credit is refundable.
Grants
A contribution towards measures such as heat pumps, process heat, audits or charging points. Budgets are limited and often run in rounds.
Green loans
A loan whose proceeds go to defined green projects. Sometimes cheaper, sometimes only a label.
Sustainability-linked loans
A loan for any business purpose whose margin moves with agreed targets, such as lower energy use per unit of output.
Promotional banks
The European Investment Bank (EIB) and national development banks fund credit lines, guarantees and leases that reach you through your own bank.
Energy-efficiency schemes
Subsidised audits, programmes run by energy suppliers, and energy performance contracts paid from the savings.
Energy suppliers often fund savings for a reason: EU member states may oblige energy distributors and retail energy sellers to achieve savings at final customers, use alternative measures, or both (source: EUR-Lex, September 2023). Ask your supplier before you pay for an audit.
Green loan or sustainability-linked loan: what is the difference?
| Question | Green loan | Sustainability-linked loan |
|---|---|---|
| What is the money for? | Defined green projects, such as insulation or solar panels | Any business purpose |
| What does the lender check? | That the proceeds go to eligible projects | Agreed indicators and targets, checked at set moments |
| How does pricing work? | Sometimes a discount, depending on the bank's own funding | The margin steps down when you meet targets, and may step up when you miss them |
| When does it fit? | One clear investment with a quote | A measurable improvement path across the business |
Both follow voluntary principles published by the Loan Market Association (LMA). Green loans rest on four core components: use of proceeds, project evaluation and selection, management of proceeds and reporting (source: LMA, March 2025). Sustainability-linked loans have five: choice of key performance indicators (KPIs), calibration of targets, loan characteristics, reporting and verification. For small and medium-sized borrowers the LMA allows KPIs on energy use or direct emissions, a baseline as a first milestone, and verification through data such as utility bills, while targets must still go beyond business as usual (source: LMA, September 2026).
Green funding by country: programmes and official bodies compared
Amounts, rates and budgets change too often to print, and several schemes changed status in the past year.
| Market | Programmes and bodies (examples) | Status when checked |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Clean energy tax credits (IRS); Rural Energy for America Program (USDA): grants and loan guarantees for agricultural producers and rural small businesses | The commercial clean vehicle credit is not allowed for vehicles acquired after 30 September 2025 (source: IRS, October 2026). Wind and solar placed in service after 31 December 2027 lose the clean electricity credits unless construction began by 4 July 2026 (source: IRS, August 2025). The rural programme took loan guarantee applications but no grant applications. |
| United Kingdom | First-year allowances for new zero-emission cars and charge point equipment; Boiler Upgrade Scheme for a heat pump or biomass boiler, also in business buildings | Allowances for purchases before April 2027 (source: GOV.UK, October 2024). The boiler scheme covers England and Wales. |
| European Union | EIB intermediated loans for SMEs and mid-caps through partner banks | Ask your bank whether it runs an EIB-backed green line. |
| Germany | Federal funding for energy and resource efficiency in business: grants through BAFA or loans through KfW, in modules such as process heat and energy management | Some modules are open only to SMEs. |
| France | Prêt Vert (Bpifrance): an unsecured loan for the ecological and energy transition of established independent SMEs and mid-caps | Must be matched by an equal amount of partner financing. |
| Netherlands | Energy Investment Allowance and MIA and Vamil (Netherlands Enterprise Agency): extra deduction or free depreciation for listed assets | Apply within three months after the order. |
| Canada | Clean Technology investment tax credit (Canada Revenue Agency): refundable, claimed on a corporate or trust return | For investment from March 2023 to the end of 2034 (source: Canada Revenue Agency, May 2026). |
| Australia | Clean Energy Finance Corporation: lower-cost green asset finance through participating lenders | No direct lending to individual borrowers; apply at a participating lender. |
| Singapore | Energy Efficiency Grant (Enterprise Singapore): co-funding for pre-approved equipment | Base tier extended to 31 March 2028 and being opened to all sectors (source: Enterprise Singapore, October 2026). |
Checked on the official pages in October 2026. Programmes open, close and change terms, sometimes mid-year; confirm with the body named before you plan on them.
Check your country
- Tax: is there an extra deduction or credit for energy or environmental assets, and an official list?
- Timing: must you apply before ordering, within a window after it, or with the tax return?
- Grants: which national or regional agency funds heat pumps, audits or charging points, and is the budget open?
- Stacking: may you combine a tax incentive and a grant for one asset, or does one reduce the other?
- Banks: does your bank or lessor offer green terms or a promotional-bank credit line?
Worked example: a laundry funds its energy investment
Marlow Laundry Services washes linen for hotels and care homes, with gas-fired washing and drying lines and two diesel vans. Owner Tamsin Marlow plans heat recovery, two heat-pump dryers, a solar roof and two electric vans with charging points.
| Investment | Amount | Funded by | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat recovery on the washing lines | €85,000 | Green loan for the named projects | €250,000 |
| Two heat-pump dryers | €140,000 | Lease for the electric vans | €110,000 |
| Solar roof | €95,000 | Grant for the dryers, approved before ordering | €35,000 |
| Two electric vans | €110,000 | Own cash | €45,000 |
| Charging points | €10,000 | ||
| Total | €440,000 | Total | €440,000 |
Fictitious Firmfocus example. The logic works in any currency.
The tax incentive on the heat recovery, dryers and solar roof is worth €22,000, but it arrives after the tax return, so Tamsin treats it as a later top-up of cash, not as funding. Net of grant and tax incentive the investment is €383,000. Savings on gas, electricity and diesel of €68,000 a year give a simple payback of about 5.6 years, and they cover the €58,000 of yearly loan and lease payments from the start.
The bank also offered a sustainability-linked loan with a lower margin if gas use per kilo of laundry fell by an agreed amount. Tamsin chose the green loan, because the projects are defined and one installation report satisfies the bank. She also ran the plan without the grant: own cash would rise to €80,000, which the business can carry by moving the solar roof back a few months.
How to build your green funding mix in five steps
- 01
Measure before you buy
Collect a year of energy bills and meter data, or have an audit done. Funders want a baseline.
- 02
Get quotes and check the lists
Ask for the exact model and check each asset against the official lists or grant conditions.
- 03
Choose the support per asset
Note every deadline and stacking rule.
- 04
Talk to your bank before ordering
Compare a green loan, a sustainability-linked loan and a lease, with and without the grant.
- 05
Apply, order and keep the evidence
Keep the order, invoices, installation report and meter readings; they can be asked for years later.
Small business or larger firm
Small business with one site
Start with the tax incentive on listed assets and a grant where one is open. Ask your lessor or bank for green terms, and take one or two measures a year.
Larger firm with several sites or a fleet
Keep a funding calendar. A sustainability-linked loan fits once you measure energy per site; promotional-bank lines and energy performance contracts suit larger programmes.
Pitfalls with green funding
- Ordering before applying: a signed quote can rule out the support.
- Counting on the grant: a plan that needs it stalls when the decision is late or negative.
- Forbidden stacking: two schemes for one asset can mean paying one back.
- No taxable profit: a deduction is worth little in a loss year.
- A label instead of a discount: compare the green loan with an ordinary loan on rate and fees.
- Forgetting the grid: a heat pump or chargers may need a heavier connection; see solar, batteries and grid congestion.
The rules that require energy savings are in energy efficiency obligations, electric vans in sustainable mobility and the strategic choices in energy strategy. Every topic on greening your business is in Sustainable business.
